October 7, 2020, Bangkok: TCEB unveils operational
\nplan for the fiscal year 2021 aimed at driving MICE out of crisis and
\nstrengthening the fundamentals of sustainability for the industry. Guided by the
\nconcept “New Normal MICE \u2013 Sustainable Growth”, the plan identifies 4
\nstrategic approaches: promoting domestic MICE, utilising innovation, attracting
\ninternational events, and developing MICE ecosystem. The bureau targets 10.4 <\/span>million<\/span> MICE
\ntravellers with 64 billion baht in revenue to the country.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya,
\nPresident of Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization)
\nor TCEB<\/span><\/b>, said that TCEB’s operational plan for the fiscal
\nyear 2021 focuses on the challenges related to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.
\nIt identifies ways to help MICE entrepreneurs revive their businesses and
\npinpoints opportunities to uplift the standards of Thailand’s MICE industry in
\nthe post-COVID-19 era.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

“During the third quarter, when
\nthe country started to ease COVID-19 restrictions, domestic MICE activities have
\nbegun to rebound as a result of a series of promotional campaigns and local
\nMICE operator’s readiness, which demonstrates the potential of domestic market.
\nRecent statistics on the participation in MICE events showed that 55.4% or
\n375,094 delegates joined events via online platforms, while 44.6% or 302,312
\nattended events on-site. The figure underscores TCEB’s success in introducing
\ntechnologies to boost online MICE activities.”<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

Taking these critical factors into
\naccount, TCEB has developed the fiscal year 2021 operational plan under the
\nconcept “New Normal MICE \u2013 Sustainable Growth”.<\/b> It is aimed at
\nenhancing the use of technology and building up the strength of Thailand’s MICE
\nindustry through four main strategies, which are stimulating the domestic
\nmarket; attracting international MICE events; propelling MICE through
\ninnovation; and fostering MICE ecosystem. The plan focuses on creating and
\npromoting opportunities to help MICE operators recover and resume normal
\noperations as soon as possible.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

According to Mr. Chiruit, <\/b>in
\norder to stimulate domestic market<\/b>, emphasis will be placed on the
\nsupport the organisation of MICE events in all regions across the country. By
\nworking closely with government agencies, private organisations, and local
\ncommunities, TCEB also aims to upgrade local MICE events into national level by
\nshowcasing local identities at each destination to attract MICE businesses.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

Towards that end, in the first
\nquarter of the new fiscal year (October \u2013 December 2020), TCEB has allocated an
\nadditional 10-million-baht budget for the promotional campaign \u201cThailand: A
\nSafer Place for Meetings\u201d<\/b>. It aims at <\/b>encouraging public and private
\nsectors to use MICE activities as a means to distribute income to local
\ncommunities. The campaign offers incentives for organisations that hold meetings,
\nincentives, seminars, training activities, CSR activities, or corporate outings
\nby December 2020. Meanwhile, TCEB will be promoting domestic exhibitions
\nthrough a cooperation network, Empower Thailand Exhibition (EMTEX), throughout
\nthe year 2021.<\/o_p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

To attract international MICE
\nevents<\/b>, TCEB focuses on trade shows. 
\nGuided by the master plan “Thailand LOG-IN Event”<\/b>, the
\nbureau will attract shows in logistic & infrastructure sector, which is in
\nline with the national development policies. Public and private organisations
\nwill be supported and facilitated to create and expand the profile of their
\nshows into logistic and infrastructure sector or bid for new international
\nshows and have them located in different regions of Thailand. The particular
\nemphasis is the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In addition, TCEB plans to introduce
\n“Festival Economy”<\/b> by using mega events and festivals to
\ncreate economic heritage, add value, and promote economic, social and
\nenvironmental development in different provinces. Meanwhile, the bureau is
\nimplementing strategic plans to attract international events through
\nrepresentatives in seven markets, namely China, India, Singapore, Japan,
\nAustralia, UK, Europe and North America.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

As for the innovation, TCEB will
\nimplement a series of measures, including the development of online and hybrid
\nMICE events, to help MICE operators to get through the crisis. In the first
\nquarter of the fiscal year 2021, TCEB will encourage entrepreneurs to run
\nbusiness events via Virtual Meeting Space (VMS) and provide support to eight
\nevents which conduct webinars and O2O activities online. These events are Thailand
\nDive Expo (TDEX), INTERCARE Asia 2020, Coffee and Bakery Fair 2020, Khon Kaen
\nInternational Motor Expo, Chiang Mai Design Week, Global Running Summit, ISURA
\n2020 Bangkok, and AHC 2020.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding the MICE ecosystem<\/b>
\ndevelopment, TCEB plans to establish the One-Stop Service Centre which will
\nprovide information and facilitate MICE events in Thailand. The centre will use
\ndigital technologies to integrate services, facilitate regulatory compliance,
\nprovide MICE event services to government agencies, and assist MICE visitors
\nwith such services as MICE Lane, Fast Track, Visa on Arrival, and related
\nhealthcare.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

In the fiscal year 2020, Thailand
\nwelcomed 10,456,899 MICE travellers, generating 61.3 billion baht in revenue.
\nOf these figures, international MICE travellers stood at 500,090, generating
\n29.8 billion baht in revenue. Corporate Meetings generated the highest revenue
\nat 9.4 billion baht with 149,638 travellers followed by Conventions which
\ngenerated 8.3 billion baht in revenue from 139,639 travellers. Incentives
\ngenerated 5.6 billion baht from 122,102 travellers, while Exhibitions generated
\n6.4 billion baht in revenue from 88,711 travellers.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

In the same period, domestic MICE travellers
\nnumbered 9,956,809, generating 31.4 billion baht in revenue. Exhibitions
\nrepresented the largest market share with 7,900,843 travellers, generating
\nrevenue of 26.4 billion baht. Conventions travellers stood at 1,350,609,
\ncontributing 3 billion baht in revenue followed by Corporate Meetings with
\n604,246 travellers, generating 1.5 billion baht, and Incentives with 101,111
\ntravellers, contributing 529 million baht in revenue.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

“We forecast 3.5% growth for
\nthe fiscal year 2021. In the first quarter, TCEB will provide support to 70 events
\nwhich underscores the importance of MICE as one of the key mechanisms to
\nstimulate Thailand’s economy. These events will create jobs and generate income
\nfor local communities, while the industry continues to move forward with strong
\ncooperation between the public and private sectors,” said Mr. Chiruit<\/b>.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n
